In 2304, CHRONOS historian Saul Rand is at a party theorizing how religion is the best way to change society for the better. Little do we know that this talk is all part of his grand and nefarious plan. But to implement it, he needs to experiment and gather some data to see if his theories are correct. Traveling to 1780 with his CHRONOS partner, Katherine, who is unaware of his plans, thinks they are there just to witness the past. Will Saul succeed or will Katherine catch him messing with the timeline? A strong story about an arrogant villain in the making, his subtle manipulations exquisitely fun to read as his egotism runs rampant. Watching him try to balance between the machinations with his experiment, keeping Katherine in the dark about his plans and trying to keep CHRONOS from finding out what's he's doing is truly a delight to read. The tension compellingly builds as we find out whether he can affect the future by changing the past.
I read this short story when it was originally published in The Time Travel Chronicles (The Future Chronicles), an anthology filled with much more excellent short stories about time travel just like this one!
Great story as all of the Chronos stories are!!

G great insight and look into character that we love to hate, before he changed the world....love the short stories
Is awful. He is a bad influence completely. But girls love the bad boys don't they? "Sigh" poor Katherine. She could have done so much better.
The trilogy doesn't go into too much detail about Saul; even though he's a major factor in the plot, you never really meet him. This novella was a nice change from the time hopping to show what Saul was like, his motives, and how he was able to orchestrate everything.
This was an interesting short story and it showed a lot more of how manipulative and narcissistic Saul really is as a character. Classic abuser with Kathy, convincing her it was something she did to change the events. As always, well written and reads quickly.
