In some ways, I could write one review for all Brett Battles' books: gripping page-turner, could not put it down, endearing characters, fresh surprising plot. Battles caught my attention with THE CLEANER, the first book in the Quinn series. With some series, each book is pretty much the same as the last, with different details plugged into the same plot. Not so with Battles' books. He keeps the story fresh, and mixes it up so each book reaches new levels of intrigue and excellence. I am definitely hooked on all of Battles' books, but especially the Quinn series. I always recommend Brett Battles' books to my friends and family.
For anyone not yet familiar with these books, start with either THE CLEANER or the book short BECOMING QUINN.
Although the series can be read out of order, character development seems easier to appreciate when read in chronological sequence.
Without including too many spoilers, THE DISCARDED deals with Quinn, Orlando and Nate teaming up to help a friend rescue an orphan who has become the center of an intermittent seven-year international hunt. Battles' treatment of Abraham, Orlando's old mentor, endears this new character to the reader. Abraham deals with the issues of aging in a young man's game, and the guilt of actions done and undone regarding the child. The team goes to surprising lengths to clean up a mess started seven years previously. When Abraham tries to refuse help, Orlando basically tells him this is what family does for each other.
Even though Quinn's profession as a "cleaner" often places him on the shady edge of the world of espionage, his moral compass keeps him on a path that lets readers cheer for him and his team as being part of "the good guys". Nevertheless, Quinn still gets tough with anyone who messes with his team. In this book, he is forced to be very tough indeed. By the end of the book, Quinn receives some surprises on a personal level which should make the next book VERY interesting.
In fact, as always, I cannot wait for the next book.

The Discarded Jonathan Quinn Book 8 (Audible Audio Edition) Brett Battles Scott Brick Audible Studios Books Reviews
This novel continues the saga of Quinn and crew and does an outstanding job of it. At issue is the welfare of a four-year old girl who mysteriously becomes the responsibility of Orlando's mentor, Abraham, as he must transport her across the world and then turn her over to a crew of near strangers. The two are only together for a few days but they quickly form a bond of trust and affection just in time for them to separate for good. How Abraham deals with the guilt and determination to find her is the basis of the story + how Quinn and crew get involved. The ending is quite unexpected and Battles' leaves an opening for a sequel which is big enough to drive a truck through!! This is an excellent thriller with an outstanding cast of well-established characters and some new faces/personalities to keep the storyline rolling along.
I have just finished reding all 8 Jonathan Quinn books back to back and have to say this series is now one of my top favorites. I am usually more of the operatives reader following, I love the thrill and excitement of the execution of an op and the camaraderie between the team members or when it's a single operative, the cunning survival skills shown when something goes wrong. I love the genre and have read from perspectives of CIA, FBI, Seals, DHS and so on. In all of these perspectives there are ALWAYS dead bodies. I just always knew that someone came along and took care of the bodies, I just NEVER thought too much about the HOW.
Starting with Book 0- Becoming Quinn, you get the beginning education into what it takes to be a CLEANER of dead bodies and covering up the evidence that there ever was a dead body in that location. The character arc of development from book 0 to Book 8 of Quinn is so intriguing to see him become this amazing man who is more than just a cleaner.
If you are looking for a new series to read, start at Book 0, if you are already a Brett Battles fan, read this book! You will NOT regret it!
"The Discarded" is Brett Battles latest offering in his Jonathan Quinn series and it diverges from the usual formula a bit. Quinn, Nate, Orlando, and Daeng are all present and accounted for but this time, the team jumps into a deep and dangerous mystery involving an old case of Abraham Delger's, Orlando's mentor. The action heats up as Quinn's team comes to Abe's support as he becomes threatened by an unknown force much like Quinn's former employer, the Office.
Abraham reluctantly delivered a frightened 4 year old child to a contact as an assignment seven years ago. He has regretted it ever since and periodically makes a cursory attempt to find out what happened to her through a CIA contact, Eli Becker. Becker finally calls him with information but is killed before they can connect. But Abe has discovered that others are seeking the missing girl with deadly intentions.
Enter Quinn and his team as they rally to support Orlando's trainer and mentor. Now two separate groups are hunting the girl and each other. Who was the girl and why was she whisked away after her mother was killed? Who is paying the shadowy organization to find and terminate her? Has Abe uncovered a hornet's nest better left untouched? Battles answers all these questions as he moves the action along at breakneck speed while ratcheting up the tension and the stakes.
I particularly liked that this was a free lance effort by Quinn and Orlando to aid a friend who has opened a Pandora's Box. They operate mainly by the seat-of-their pants employing their usual resources to find and hopefully protect the girl. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes skullduggery common to secret organizations each pursuing differing objectives. "The Discarded" is highly recommended both to long time Quinn fans as well as curious newcomers.
